WA Healthcare Jobs | Medical Employment Perth, Western Australia

WA healthcare jobs are becoming hard to fill as an acute shortage of trained doctors and nurses in Australia and especially in Western Australia starts to bite. This shortage is particularly evident in regional WA where there are many more health sector jobs, particularly doctors jobs and nurses jobs, than there are people to fill them.

Nursing jobs in WA are also in very high demand across Western Australia in regional and rural centres, with many opportunities available for permanent, contract and temporary work.

This shortage of health sector workers has been increased with the building of new hospitals in Perth, regional areas of WA and right across Australia. The increased difficultly for patients in major cities to find a doctor to be their regular GP, has meant Australia has had to attract doctors and nurses from overseas to fill the void of new WA healthcare jobs.

New doctors and nurses can find it difficult to adapt to the local culture, as well as the isolation of some regional communities. Notwithstanding that, in recent times Australia has been the highest per capita recruiter of foreign-trained doctors in the world.

As a result of this shortage of workers to fill WA healthcare jobs, the Australian Government’s
Department of Immigration and Citizenship, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Ageing, has developed procedures (see below) to assist doctors and nurses from overseas to migrate to Australia and WA to work in doctors jobs and nurses jobs. Overseas GPs and specialists can apply for an Australian visa if they have a primary medical qualification from another country, or secured their medical qualifications in Australia but are not a permanent resident of Australia.

If you enjoy working as part of a team, you are good with people and you’d like a job with responsibility, a career in the health sector could be extremely fulfilling and rewarding.

Tens of thousands of people work in Australia’s health industry and they’re not just working in WA health jobs as doctors or nurses. They could be working as part of a team that helps patients get the treatment and care they require, or they could be specialising in aged care. Whatever your skills and interests, you should find a role to suit you in Australia’s and WA’s healthcare industry. Here are some of the benefits:

  • excellent opportunities - there are many different opportunities for both men and women
  • varied working conditions - not all jobs are hospital-based
  • good career prospects – for those who keep learning and training, there is excellent career waiting in healthcare

Working in Australia as a Specialist, GP or Nurse

Australia has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. With an excellent balance of public healthcare (Medicare) and a thriving private health sector, Australia has achieved what many other countries have yet to achieve - quality, comprehensive healthcare and choice for all Australians.

This provides an enviable environment for qualified health sector staff to utilise their training and skills in one of the best countries in the world and fill WA healthcare jobs.

For people from overseas, there is information below that should help you assess whether you could qualify to work in Australia.

Aged Care Jobs in Australia and WA

Like many other countries in the world, Australia is grappling with a severe shortage of registered nurses (RNs) to work in the aged care sector. All areas of nursing are currently affected by shortages and high care residential aged care services are no exception.

The selection, recruitment and retention of suitable staff to meet the complex needs of residents in aged care facilities are becoming increasingly challenging and are being addressed as a matter of priority.

Residents in aged care facilities require increasingly complex care and the need for qualified and skilled nursing staff has never been greater. Currently, nursing is experiencing difficulties in maintaining an adequate workforce and the ageing population (including the nursing workforce) means more challenges lie ahead. Innovative and creative strategies are constantly being developed to improve the image of aged care nursing and to promote work in aged care as a career specialty for nurses.

Australia’s rapidly aging workforce will see thousands of nurses retire over the next 20 years, and even though there is an increase in enrolments in university nursing courses, the dropout rate is relatively high.

Skills Recognition for Overseas Healthcare & Medical Migrants to Australia

Australian Medical Council (AMC) assesses the knowledge, skills and professional attributes of overseas-qualified medical practitioners who are seeking registration to practice in Australia. It also assesses for recognition of medical specialties.

General practitioners and non-specialist doctors who have not previously worked in Australia can assess their skill levels by taking the Australian Medical Council (AMC) Multi Choice Question Trial Examination online. It costs AUD$25.00 and consists of 50 multiple choice questions, with the standard set at the same level as a graduating Australian medical student. The AMC Pathways information assessment process follows one of four different pathways:

1. Competent Authority Pathway
2. Standard Pathway (AMC Examination)
3. Standard Pathway (workplace-based assessment)
4. Specialist Assessment Pathway (full comparability/Area of Need)

Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) program has developed three assessment pathways for International Medical Graduates wishing to be registered in Australia.

1. The Specialist Pathway (successful completion leads to registration in the relevant speciality).
2. The Competent Authority (successful completion leads to general registration).
3. The Standard Pathway (successful completion leads to general registration).

You need to demonstrate your English language proficiency to a level determined by the Medical Board of Australia and approved by the Australian Health Workforce Ministerial Council.
